<image:title>blog - Friendship makes all the difference</image:title>
<image:caption>Part of the beauty of Sanctuary is that we see the most unlikely friendships form between people that would rarely ever encounter each other. They cross political and economic ideologies, they cross socio-economic boundaries, they span divides of gender and sexual identity (and bridge the underlying ideologies that shape how we even think about these). These friendships are often exemplified by small and big acts of kindness and care for each other. Friends sharing their tents or sleeping bags, offering someone else their jacket or gloves on a cold night. If only they had those politicians as friends, right?</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Friendship makes all the difference</image:title>
<image:caption>The great missiologist Leslie Newbigin wrote about the “logic of the gospel” as being one in which humanity is inherently relational and communal. To truly receive the good news we must “open the door to our neighbour” and share our home and life with each other. This inherently inefficient and slow approach has been the way God has chosen to work. Redemption is relational.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - 30 Year Teaser - Meals Together</image:title>
<image:caption>There isn’t anything quite like the company of friends. Whether it’s old friends or new, being together can be rejuvenating. When the world seems like it is falling apart, it is these friendships that give us the strength and courage to go on.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - 30 Year Teaser - That Sunday Thing</image:title>
<image:caption>Some people say that church is what happens on Sunday. We believe that church is what happens from Monday to Sunday. Our daily actions show our priorities. On Sunday though we come together to renew our spirits and give thanks. Communing, singing, praying, laughing and learning are staples of our Sunday thang, and it is these activities that help us through the week of church ahead.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - 30 Year Teaser - Creation</image:title>
<image:caption>There is something grounding in the act of creation. Through creative activities like art, photography, drama, and storytelling we reflect our Creator. We encourage, listen and provide space for our community to listen to their hearts.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - 30 Year Teaser - Celebration</image:title>
<image:caption>Whether it’s joining together to dance, or sitting around a table celebrating Christmas, when we engage in celebration we lift each other up. There is something mysterious and other-worldly when you dance with someone who just cussed you out. Or when you open Christmas crackers with someone who just lost their child to CAS. These moments bring us together and help us remember our humanity.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - 30 Year Teaser - Covid-19</image:title>
<image:caption>What an incredible time. Encampments, overdose deaths, housing, violent evictions, family portraits…so many different things have occurred. And we are trying to hold our community well in the midst of all of it. Meals, art, sleeping spaces, health care, outreach, advocacy. So much the same and not the same at the same time. We are looking forward with eager anticipation to when we can sit around a table together again.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Poetry is waiting all night for your Sun to rise Poetry is wasting your time fooling yourself with lies Poetry is that crucial moment you finally catch those rays And although its only a moment it gives you poetry for days Poetry is watching something you love become something you despise Poetry is watching vivid crimson dull to rust as it dries Poetry is the antici ...Pation that sometimes makes you feel light in the head Poetry is the sorrow you feel When your Sun doesn't get out of bed Poetry is the blanket that smothers you in the night Poetry is the blanket you're clutching at in fright Poetry is the blanket that hugs you when you're cold You start to sweat Now your blanket is wet Poetry can be so cold Poetry is a blanket that is fuzzy on one side Poetry can be razor sharp Can a blanket skin you alive? Poetry is a blanket whose edges are starting to fray Poetry is the blanket I just can't seem to throw away</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Giving Thanks: Shout-out to our Kitchen Crew</image:title>
<image:caption>When COVID-19 hit Toronto, food insecurity surged and Sanctuary faced a huge increase in demand for our weekly meals. At the same time, we had to implement cleaning and safety protocols that made our meals more labour intensive than ever before. In the face of this overwhelming challenge, we turned to our community. We hired around 10 folks who had been volunteering in our kitchen and hanging-out at Sanctuary for years to be our official kitchen and cleaning crew. As we learned more about the demands of operating during a pandemic, we hired several more people to help serve food and clean between drop-ins. Our crew of cooks, cleaners, and servers have worked with amazing energy and passion these past 7 months, and there is no way that we could have stayed open and served over 700 meals a week without them. I stole a few minutes recently to chat with Dominique, who has been part of our kitchen crew on Thursday and Sunday nights, so that she could share a bit about what it’s been like for her to work at Sanctuary during the pandemic.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Giving Thanks: Shout-out to our Kitchen Crew - What is your role?</image:title>
<image:caption>Making sure that the food is well prepared. Making sure there’s enough food for everyone till the end of the night. Working to maintain a good spirit between all the team members in the kitchen. Cleaning the grill. Having a positive attitude and keeping things upbeat. Being encouraging and trying to make people feel better. Like, if someone comes in for dinner and they are emotionally feeling like a 5/10, we want them to be feeling like a 7/10 or an 8/10 before they leave.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Making Strides Together - In 2009, as Sanctuary hosted our first fundraising walk (then called the “5K Walk for Poverty + Justice”), Richard thought it sounded like an interesting idea. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to walk too far, but he wanted to help out his community. Richard had been hanging out around Sanctuary for years, and was an established part of our drama troupe, the Screaming Monkeys.</image:title>

<image:title>blog - Why I Run - Here’s why: I am running because: I am so proud of the 700+ beautiful, hot meals our kitchen team has prepared each week throughout the pandemic. I am running because: I have received immeasurable grace from friends at Sanctuary who have way more important things to worry about than educating a clueless middle-class white lady who is trying to learn about life on the street. I am running because: a year ago I couldn’t run (I couldn’t even walk), and my friends at Sanctuary stood by me and held me up.</image:title>

<image:title>blog - Why I Run - I am running because: I have seen the way our clinic team enters weird, hostile, and heartbreaking situations without judgement and offers exemplary care. I am running because: it feels like no one in power cared about the fact that thousands of Torontonians were homeless until those people became more visible in their neighbourhoods.</image:title>

<image:title>who we are - Sanctuary is a church and a community. Some of us are homeless and some of us are housed. Some of us are sober and some of us use substances. Some of us have plenty of privilege and comfort and some of us have almost none. Guided by the Gospel, we consider people who are poor and excluded to be the heart and center of our community. Together, we strive to offer the love, dignity, stability and resources that all of us need to flourish. To this end, we undertake many life-giving initiatives including running community meals, street outreach, a health clinic, an arts program and Sunday services.</image:title>
<image:caption>The most important thing we do is spend our lives together: from doctor’s appointments to birthday parties; from evictions to finding a home; from jail visits to family visits; from mourning death, violence, and loss, to celebrating life and reconciled relationships. All are welcome here.</image:caption>

<image:title>who we are - In 1985, the members of and R&B band called Red Rain felt a calling to move from playing in Christian coffee houses and church basements to playing in bars, jails, and festivals—taking the message of Jesus where it doesn’t usually get heard. In 1990, Central Gospel Hall invited the band to use their building at 25 Charles Street East for storage and practice. By 1992, the congregation at Central Gospel Hall had become so small they made the difficult decision to close. At the time, Red Rain’s vocalist and pianist Greg Paul, along with Karen Paul and a small hand-full of others, had began building a vision for doing outreach work with marginalized people in Toronto’s downtown core. This was the seed of what would grow to become Sanctuary Ministries of Toronto.</image:title>
<image:caption>Sanctuary began operating out of 25 Charles Street in 1992. In 1999 Greg Paul launched a successful capital campaign and purchased the building (for $750,000!) with the help of many generous individual and corporate donors. Since that time, Sanctuary has been a haven of safety, security and respect for some of the most marginalized people in the city of Toronto. Our staff team has grown from its original 2 to a current total of 20 as we added more activities in response to our community’s dreams and needs. We have also continually relied almost completely on the generosity of individual donors and small foundations to keep our doors open. Today, gifts from these sources make up over 70% of our annual operating budget.</image:caption>

<image:title>weekly gatherings - Art Studio</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe that everyone carries gifts and talents that should be allowed, called forth, and encouraged to flourish. Our arts program is a safe space for our community to engage in a variety of projects that strive to recognize the needs of every person as a whole. Art provides a means for self-expression, self-realization and human connection, and plays an important role in the life of our community.</image:caption>

<image:title>weekly gatherings - Street Outreach</image:title>
<image:caption>We go out into the streets to build relationships and healthy community. We walk the streets, mostly in the downtown east side, offering bottles of water, socks, hats, snacks and an invitation to stop by Sanctuary for a meal or a chat. Our team also offers support to people who are connected to our community, but we don’t consider this outreach work—it’s friends helping friends. This work includes accompanying people to appointments; helping people to find housing, move, clean their apartment; or visiting people in the hospital or in jail.</image:caption>

<image:title>weekly gatherings - Community Meals</image:title>
<image:caption>The main purpose of community meals is to offer space to build life-giving relationships, and some respite from the harsh realities of poverty and homelessness. We offer meals prepared by a crew from our community, medical care, shower facilities, personal care items, clothing, computers, phones, wifi, books, and pastoral care. In a given week, we see an average of 300 people between our two community meals. We honour birthdays and use holidays like Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas to celebrate with extra-special menus. Our meals are also a time time to gather together to grieve and express pain caused by the losses, danger, and injustices of life on the street. Everyone is encouraged to care well for one another. We’d love it if you’d join us sometime.</image:caption>

<image:title>weekly gatherings - Health Clinic</image:title>
<image:caption>Sanctuary’s clinic strives to offer care in the context of a welcoming, non-judgemental community. Our clinic staff are deeply aware of and attentive to the particular challenges and resiliencies of folks in the street community, and they are able to go above-and-beyond and come up with creative, collaborative solutions to help people keep up treatment protocols and make appointments. We started our Health Clinic in 2001 after a few years of offering healthcare on the streets. Today, operating with three registered nurses, Sanctuary’s clinic has an average of 250 active patients and 800 unique visits a year. We are also very fortunate to have a partnership with Inner City Health Associates, who provide a doctor on Tuesdays and Thursdays to work in our clinic during community meals.</image:caption>

<image:title>weekly gatherings - Sunday Service</image:title>
<image:caption>Sanctuary is a Christian community, but our Sunday service contains a wide spectrum of believers and beliefs. Our unity is in our shared faith in Christ as expressed through love and justice for the poor. We try to structure our services to be responsive to the needs of the community—the order of songs is not planned in advance; no one is designated to read scripture or to give thanks for the communion elements; everyone is welcome to serve the community in this way. A rotating roster of people teach on Sundays: Greg Paul, Rachel Tulloch, Gil Clelland, and Janice Towndrow. Everyone is welcome. Sunday Service: 5pm-7pm</image:caption>

<image:title>viva - Viva’s heart was touched by the welcoming community of Sanctuary when she lived in the condominium next door, from 2018-2021. She made friends, shared meals, and eventually heeded the call of Jesus and started coming to the Sunday church. She is grateful to the Sanctuary community for her personal conversion and is eager to give back. Professionally, Viva has worked on a wide spectrum of business problems, including developing business strategy, building financial plans and scaling digital products. Recently, Viva shifted her focus to nurturing her growing family. A native of North China, Viva has lived in Singapore, U.S., Brazil and is now proud to call Toronto home.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Core Values - Justice</image:title>
<image:caption>We acknowledge that our society is built upon and supports injustice and oppression. These particularly affect the people who make up the Sanctuary community. We are often complicit in unjust systems, but we are committed to working towards what we understand to be God’s vision for our world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Core Values - Becoming</image:title>
<image:caption>We seek to maintain an open, humble posture that invites us to learn together and from one another and to support each other as we live - and struggle - in the tension between who we are and who we strive to be. Through the grace of God, we long for and work towards reconciliation and healing in all of our relationships.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Core Values - Welcome</image:title>
<image:caption>We want each person who finds themselves at Sanctuary to be met with warmth, safety, and the sense of home that is rooted in being deeply known and accepted. Therefore, we aim to embrace and love all people in our community for who they are, not for who we think they ought to be.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Core Values - Relational</image:title>
<image:caption>We seek to walk alongside one another and share our lives, both giving and receiving care and valuing each person’s gifts. As we walk together in this way, we are given opportunities to honour and bear witness, both privately and publicly, to one another’s stories.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Core Values - Wellness</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe that all people should be able to pursue wellness of body, soul and mind. No matter what someone’s journey, we desire to offer each person dignity in pursuing their understanding of a quality of life for themselves. As we do this, we long for individual and communal redemption and renewal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Core Values - Creativity</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe that we are each made in the image of a creative God. As such, we see creative expression as a fundamental human need and a quintessentially human act. Moreover, we recognize the importance of artistic expression as a means of giving a voice to members of our community whose voices are often silenced.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Core Values - Celebration!</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe that collective celebration is an important part of our lives together. We seek opportunities for creative, joyful and authentic expressions of our individual and communal uniqueness. In both profound and light-hearted ways, we celebrate the value and gifts of our community and our hope for future redemption.</image:caption>

He studied at U of T and took several theology courses at Trinity College, but literature has always been a great love. For over a decade, he facilitated a book, poetry, and movie group at Redeemer's Common Table. He retired from the civil service a number of years ago—a career that included five years as Vice President of CUPE 1750.
